August 10, 2011: Field of Erroneous Scorekeeping
Field of Dreams opened in cinemas on April 21, 1989.
During the film, as you know, Kevin Costner's character goes to Fenway Park with James Earl Jones' character to watch the Red Sox play the Athletics.
We can assume that the film was shot in 1988.
There is a brief shot of Kevin Costner (or a hand pretending to be Kevin Costner) keeping score.
The camera shows the following, mostly-incomplete names on the scorecard:
I checked Baseball-Reference.com to see which game they went to.
Of the four games that Oakland played at Fenway Park during the 1988 season, there was only one game where the line-up matches Costner's scorecard:
(The rest of the starting line-up that day: Sam Horn, Todd Benzinger, Rick Cerone, Brady Anderson, and pitcher Jeff Sellers.)
That game occurred on May 16, 1988.
Sadly, though, the props person who prepared the scorecard for the film just made up the scoring.
The scorecard says Reed struck out; yet in reality, he grounded to 3rd.
The scorecard says Barrett grounded to 3rd; really, he flied out to left.
The scorecard says Boggs: P-3; really, he walked.
Field of Dreams, my arse. Field of Erroneous Scorekeeping, more like.
